Message From AAHP – RRG President

In Florida, affiliated academic healthcare providers (AAHP) are often challenged to personally afford claims-made medical professional liability (MPL) coverage of $250k/750k causing many AAHPs to go “bare.”

Without MPL insurance, the providers are personally liable from $1 (indemnity and defense) and often lack defense attorney representation when a claim initially presents, as well as experienced staff to proactively manage all aspects of claims and litigation.

The Florida Board of Governors’ Self-Insurance Programs created the Florida Affiliated Academic Healthcare Providers – A Reciprocal Risk Retention Group (AAHP-RRG) to support the affiliated academic healthcare providers who support the healthcare teaching, research, and community service missions of our universities’ health care colleges, institutes, and affiliated hospitals.  The AAHP began July 1, 2025 and offers claims-made medical professional liability bodily injury coverage in the amount of $250,000 per occurrence / $750,000 in a fixed policy period aggregate (7/1 – 6/30 annually with prorated coverage pricing for providers who enroll during a policy year). This coverage meets physicians’ responsibility to demonstrate medical professional liability (MPL) financial responsibility under Florida Statute 459.0085 and ensures compliance with most hospital bylaws and minimum MPL coverage requirements.

Coverage under the AAHP-RRG is limited to individual private healthcare providers (i.e., not private hospital facility or group corporate practice).  Eligible applicants qualify to submit and have a professional liability questionnaire evaluated as a Florida AAHP by their active support of the healthcare missions of the Florida Board of Governors healthcare self-insurance programs serving University of Florida, Florida State University, University of Central Florida, Florida Atlantic University, and Florida International University.  To submit a professional liability questionnaire for review click here
